Welcome to the start of the 2018-2019 school year! Second grade will be an exciting and rewarding time for your child. We will explore many topics such as the Government, Communities, Careers, Fairy Tales, and Habitats, as well as engage in many STEAM and STEM activities. I am looking forward to an amazing year of learning with both you and your second grader.
HOMEWORK
Homework will come home in a purple, plastic folder and is designed to take no more than 30 minutes. Daily homework will consist of spelling, reading, and math facts. Special assignments such as projects, research reports, etc. will be assigned throughout the school year and will be given a specific due date.
UNFINISHED CLASSWORK
Any work that was started in class but not finished, needs to be completed at home and brought back to school the next day. This is in addition to any assigned homework. Your child needs to be sure to use his/her time wisely so this doesn’t add to time spent doing homework.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
McSwain Students are the kindest, work the hardest, have the highest expectations, and smile often. They are expected to work, think, and behave in the best way they know how. McSwain Students are expected to choose kindness and do whatever it takes to learn and allow fellow classmates to learn.
PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
Parents and families are an integral part of our classroom and your child’s success. Please ensure your child is successful by making sure his/her homework is complete, reminding him/her to choose kindness, and to always do his/her best. Reading with your child on a nightly basis is a fabulous way to connect with your child and instill in him/her a love of reading.
CLASSROOM HELPERS
I love to have helpers in our classroom. At Back-to-School Night, there will be a sign-up sheet if you are interested. I will also be in need of a room parent(s).
PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION
You are welcome to call the school at any time to leave me a voicemail (354-2700 ext. 211). I will return your call as soon as possible. You may also email me at [email protected].
BIRTHDAYS
If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday with the class, please let me know ahead of time so that I can make arrangements for a quick recess celebration.
SUPPLIES
Most of the supplies that your child needs will be furnished at school. There will be special projects from time to time that might require supplies from home. As these projects approach, I will let you know. Your child is welcome to bring any markers, pencils, etc. for his/her own use or to share with the class. I will be accepting donations of Kleenex, baby wipes or disinfectant wipes throughout the school year. We use the wipes to clean our desks and tables and to help cut down on colds and the sharing of germs. Our classroom can also use donations of various school supplies such as glue, crayons, markers, colored pencils, colored card stock, and various art supplies. For our STEM and STEAM activities, you can go to hand2mind.com to get an idea of the items that are needed and used in our STEM and STEAM area.
MAKER SPACE
In our classroom, we have a Maker Space area. Maker Space provides students with hands-on, creative ways to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in science and engineering. To support our Maker Space, donations of anything that can be used to build or create would be fabulous: Styrofoam, legos, toothpicks, blocks, paper/plastic cups, plates, bowls, spoons, Ziplock baggies, straws, pipe cleaners, toilet paper/paper towel rolls, rubber bands, Q-tips, tape, beads, magnets, magnetic blocks, dominoes, etc.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our classroom. Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions. I look forward to a great year with both you and your child and I thank you for the opportunity and privilege of teaching him/her.
